Badgers fall to Southern Vermont in tri-match finale
The Northern Vermont University- Johnson men’s volleyball team fell in the second of two matches on Feb. 16. Southern Vermont College took the match by a score of 3-1.
Both teams seemed evenly matched throughout most of the match. The Mountaineers prevailed last weekend beating the Badgers by a score of 3-1 and were back in Carter Gym this evening for another faceoff. This evening the Badgers were led by Wyatt Moberg (Acton, M.A.) and Ryan Willette (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Moberg provided five kills and four assists, while Willette added five kills. Throughout the first set, both teams were neck and neck. The Mountaineers took an early 11-3 lead but the Badgers climbed back cutting the lead to six points. A Badger service error sparked the Mountaineers as they closed the set winning 25-19.
In the second set of the match the Badgers were down early but made a run of their own to bury the deficit. They tied the game at 4 a piece. Throughout most of the set both teams traded points until a kill by Austin Walters (Grantham, N.H) put the Badgers ahead 18-17. Consecutive errors from the mountaineers and a late run by the Badgers secured the win in set two by a score of 25-23.
In the third set the Mountaineers collected themselves and played with composure. They were strong receiving the ball and attacked at a steady pace to take the third set by a score of 25-13. They headed into the fourth set the Mountaineers continued to play with composure leading the Badgers by a score of 9-6. The Mountaineers were steady and held the lead for the entire set ultimately winning by a score of 25-14.
The Badgers will host Pine Manor on Saturday, February 23 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
