New athletic staff member excited to start
After an extensive search that included 60 resumes, 10 phone interviews, and five in-person interviews, the Johnson State College Athletic Department hired Cameron Creamer as the new assistant athletic director for internal and external communications, filling the void created by Elaine Harvey’s departure to Wellesley College.
Creamer is originally from Lyman, Maine and graduated from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine with a bachelor’s of science in marketing management in 2015, and a master’s in business administration in 2016.
During his time at Thomas College, Creamer constructed the foundation of what would eventually become a career in athletic administration. “I initially started working in the athletic department as a work-study job, specifically doing public address announcing for games,” he said. “By my junior year, I had an internship with the sports information department, and that’s where my interest in the field as a career began.”
For most people, attaining a master’s in any subject takes at least two years, but thanks to Thomas College’s accelerated MBA program, Creamer was able to complete his degree in only one. He took advantage of his additional time at the institution to further cement himself within their athletic department.
“In my graduate year, I served for a month as interim director of athletic communications until a full-time person was hired, then served as an assistant for the rest of the year,” he said.
Head Athletic Director Jamey Ventura was excited about hiring Creamer from the start. “When Cameron’s resume came in, we knew we had to get him in for an in-person interview,” he said. “We feel like he has a great personality and energy for the job.”
According to Creamer, his responsibilities are “to manage and grow JSC’s intercollegiate athletics programs through fundraising, strengthen ties with athletic alumni, manage sports information for all 15 varsity programs, market and promote the varsity athletic programs, and oversee game day operations.”
In addition, Ventura foresees Creamer revolutionizing the statistical aspect of the department.
“Because Cameron has such extensive experience in sports information from when he was at Thomas College, I think he is going to do a great job in reaching out and building our archive statistics,” Ventura said. “We have tons of files and records on paper that need to be consolidated digitally.”
The digital consolidation of JSC’s sports statistics will enable student-athletes to be recognized for record-breaking achievements the moment they happen. They will then be able to live on in the database throughout their years as an alumnus and beyond.
Although Creamer’s employment at JSC only began on Aug. 15, he already has an appreciation for his new environment. “The main thing that drew me to JSC is the feeling of support that the athletic department has from the rest of the school,” he said. “The school is one big supportive community that wants everyone to be successful. I love the campus. Everybody has been so helpful and welcoming.”
When asked what he was looking forward to at JSC, Creamer said, “Working with the student-athletes and making their experience here the best it can be. The department is on its way up with its many plans for the future and I am extremely excited to be a part of it.”
