Women’s tennis captains spotlight
The Johnson State women’s tennis team announced its leadership team for the 2016-17 year. Nicole Monick and Kali Covell have both been selected to serve their team as captains for through the non-traditional season and into the regular season.
Nicole Monick, a sophomore from Bennigton, Vermont, has served the Badgers well in the #2 doubles and the #5 singles spot for her team. After being recently appointed as a NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative, Monick is looking forward to serving dual leadership roles.
Monick believes that being a leader means, “being someone my team can confide in. Being a leader is more then just giving orders, but someone that is fair and gives inspiration to a group of individuals.” One of Monick’s goals is to continue the development of the women’s team that was started last season. “And to beat Castleton,” Monick added.
Covell, a sophomore from Hartford, Vermont, is clear on her leadership vision as well. She believes strongly in the “three P’s”: “Have a passion, do it with purpose, and support your people in any way you can.” Covell shares Monick’s desire to continue the positive momentum from last season. “Teams need someone to look up to,” Covell said. “I hope to be that person for my team.”
The women’s tennis team will be practicing this spring in the non-traditional season to gear up for the regular season, which is slated to begin in September. Last season, the Badgers made their first appearance at the post-season tournament in six years.
