Badgers best Chargers in key conference victory
The Johnson State women’s basketball team downed the visiting Colby-Sawyer women’s basketball team, 63-51 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Wednesday evening at Carter Gymnasium. With the win, Johnson improves to 10-12 overall and 7-8 in the NAC, while the Chargers drop to 10-11 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Johnson State received 15 points from the junior duo of Kasey DeGreenia and Ashley Goddard. Domonique Carter-Stanley also reached double figures with 10 points, while Allyson Bruckner just missed a double-double with eight points and a game best 11 rebounds.
Colby-Sawyer’s Jessica Shenkel led all players with 19 points on 6-11 shooting. She connected on 5-9 from beyond the arc and moved into fifth place on the career three-pointers list with 157 passing KJ Krasco ‘05. Lexi Iannone added nine points, while Emmani Robinson grabbed a team best eight rebounds.
The Chargers opened the game with a pair of baskets before the Badgers got on the board at the 5:15 mark to cut the lead in half. Jessica Shenkel made three three-pointers in the quarter to help the Chargers lead 16-8 after one. Johnson was held to two field goals, but made four free throws.
Johnson took its first lead of the game after scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter. Kasey DeGreenia and Ashley Goddard scored four points apiece in the run. Colby-Sawyer responded by scoring the next six points on a trey from Lexi Iannone and free throws from Emmani Robinson and Alyssa Keefe. After a pair of free throws from Goddard brought the Badgers within two with just over two minutes to play, Colby-Sawyer ended the half with a pair of layups to lead 26-20.
The first three buckets of the third were three pointers with two coming from Johnson and one from the Chargers. Colby-Sawyer held a lead for the entire frame although the Badgers came within one early in the quarter. With the lead at 38-35 with less than a minute to play, Colby-Sawyer would again score the final four points of the quarter to take a 42-35 advantage into the fourth. Jessica Shenkel continued her hot shooting with eight points in the quarter.
Johnson knotted the game at 47-47 after a 12-5 run to begin the quarter, but the Chargers retook the lead nearly two minutes later on a Lexi Iannone layup. Ashley Goddard tied the game once again with a pair of free throws on the next trip down the floor with four minutes remaining. After a turnover by the visitors, Goddard gave the Badgers a lead for the first time since early in the second quarter. An Iannone lay-in on the ensuing possession brought the Chargers even with three minutes to play. Domonique Carter-Stanley gave the home team a lead with a pair of jumpers down the stretch as the Badgers would hold on for a 63-51 win.
The Badgers will host Lyndon on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Chargers will have a quick turnaround and will host UMaine-Farmington on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Thomas on Saturday at 1 p.m.
