Norwich Sweeps Johnson 9-0
The Norwich University men’s tennis team rebounded from its first loss of 2015 in a big way on Tuesday March 17 with a 9-0 shutout victory over Johnson State in non-league action at Shapiro Fieldhouse.
Freshman Jeff Purdy stayed perfect in his young collegiate career, taking No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 and teaming with Jay Carter to take No. 3 doubles 8-1. Purdy downed Greg Davis in singles action and then teamed with Carter to beat Alex Harcourt and Kemal Onor 8-1 in third doubles.
Carter beat Zach Baughn 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets at No. 4 singles to improve to 2-1 on the year in solo matches.
Seniors Ryan Grindle and Patrick Ogden each swept their matches as well. Grindle took No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1 over Gerrit Lane. He then teamed with sophomore Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) to win No. 2 doubles 8-1 over Alex Pakatar and Davis.
Ogden improved to 2-0 on the year in singles, winning No. 3 singles over Pakatar 6-0, 6-0. Ogden teamed with freshman Marc-Olivier Tourigny to take No. 1 doubles 8-2 over Lane and Cole Hennessy.
Tourigny beat Hennessy 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Eagan closed out the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Harcourt at No. 6 singles.
Norwich (2-1, 0-0 GNAC North) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Lyndon State at 4 p.m. at Shapiro Fieldhouse. Johnson State falls to 0-3 on the season.
