Badgers Drop home twinbill to Castleton
The Johnson state softball team dropped a pair of NAC conference games (5-1, 13-6) against Castleton State on Saturday, April 19 at Johnson State College. Johnson State drops to 6-15 on the season and 5-4 in the NAC while Castleton now stands at 9-13 on the year.
Johnson celebrated the two four year seniors on the squad Emily Himberg andAmber McCullock prior to the first pitch.
During the first of two games, sophomore pitcher Andrea Williams threw a nine hit game allowing five runs from 36 batters over the full game and continued on when the game went to extra innings.
Freshman Amanda Coulombe crossed the plate to secure the Badgers lone run scored while filling the pinch runner’s role in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Katie Gagne drove in the first Castleton run. Johnson answered at the bottom of the inning with its first run when Coulombe rounded home. The score remained tied at 1-1 until extra innings when Castleton un-corked their offense with 4 unanswered runs.
Game two saw the Spartans take control offensively beating Johnson 13-6. Freshman Alex Macey led the Badgers offensively; she hit a three run homer in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Freshmen Jennie Moore and Amanda Coulombe both contributed with one RBI respectively.
Castleton saw a three run homer of its own from Jessica Babcock in the top of the fourth. The Spartans never let Johnson back into the game and cruised to the seven run victory.
Castleton pitcher Katie Gagne picked up the win for the Spartans with 20 batters faced.
