Green Mountain College swept doubles action and narrowly swept the singles fights in men’s tennis en route to an 8-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win over Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.
The Eagles freshmen Connor Braden (Lafayette, Ind.) and Nate Berner-Tobin (Stratham, N.H.)started the afternoon on the winning tract as they defeated the Badgers’ pairing of Cole Hennessy and Cory Chase 8-2 in first flight doubles. Number two doubles saw GMC seniors Andrew O’Neill (Philmont, N.Y.) and Chris Gaskin (Altanta, Ga.) oust JSC’s Chris Mitchell and Greg Davis 8-1. The same 8-1 score was earned by the Eagle duo of nicole Cardish (Walden, N.Y.) and Duong Vo (Hanoi, Vietnam) as they upset their visiting counterparts Matthew Boltzer and Kemal Cross.
Braden, Berner-Tobin, Cardish and Gaskin each earned straight-sets victories over their Badger opponents, although it took a 7-3 tie breaker win for Berner-Tobin to get past his adversary. O’Neill earned a tough 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Mitchell in third flight singles in the only match that went the distance.
Johnson earned a victory in sixth flight singles as Zach Baughn defeated Vo 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
The victory for Green Mountain College (3-7, 2-4 NAC) brings an end to the regular season. Johnson State College (0-9, 0-5 NAC) will face MCLA in its season finale on Sunday at home.
